Color System

In order to find improvements in a smart manner, AVIX uses a color system of
classification. The different work operations required to perform a particular production
procedure are classified according to three different color categories.

With the help of the color system, everything in a manufacturing company can be
presented in an unambiguous manner. It is possible to perform red/yellow/green analyses
for an operation, a pace, a workstation, a complete production line, an entire factory or an
entire group.

In those cases where classification is used by everyone within production it provides the
opportunity to compare completely different activities in a fair and proper manner. The
color system shows how productive the applied working methods are and where losses are
made. In this way it is easy to identify the improvement opportunities.

Productive Work - Green

By productive work we mean the assembly of a value object. Assembly is the placement of a
value object in the final location on the product. This means that the work contributes
increased customer value to the final product. All productive work is represented with the
color green. The setting or adjustment of the value object before or after an assembly
process cannot, however, be given the color green – only the actual placement of the
object can. Nor can the final placement of a fixation object on the product be given the
color green.

Actions – Yellow

By actions we mean the work operations that take place before or after productive
operations. Examples of such operations include:

  • Retrieving or taking a value object, fixation object or production aid.
  • Placing a value object, fixation object or production aid in a storage place.
  • Placing (assembling) a fixation object in its final location on the product.
  • Affixing a value object or fixation object.
  • Replacing used production aids in their positions.

These operations are always necessary in order to carry out productive operations. All
actions with objects or different tools in production are given the color yellow.

Losses – Red

Losses are represented by the color red and symbolize the dis-organisation of an object or
tool and a stop in the workflow.

Dis-organisation includes movements of objects and tools outside the workstation (the
operator’s reach). This type of loss arises as a result of the existing layout. Examples of this
type of loss include:

  • Steps, the operator must move in order to retrieve or return objects or
    production aids.
  • Movements, the operator uses an overhead crane or other production aids
    to retrieve or return objects.

Losses can also arise within the operator’s or assembler’s reach if the action is not
ergonomic. Non-ergonomic actions in AVIX include:

  • Bending
  • Stretching
  • Body Twist

The above physical movements do not generally contribute to the execution of the work task
or the completion of the final product. They represent structural problems and/or obstacles
that entail the operator performing unnecessary movements and/or retrievals and removals
of work tools to carry out the work.

Wait - Orange

If the operator must wait for material or other items this is a loss and is given the color
orange. Waiting is a loss but is separated from the red time with its own color, orange.

If the operator is waiting while the product is being processed it is not defined as wait, it is
rather a balancing loss.
